Hello! My name is Isabel Candy and I interned this summer in the Property Tax department in the London office. I was fortunate enough to be one of two interns awarded the title of Grant Thornton Intern of the Year 2013 Regional Winner for London, and spent a day with the other regional winners presenting to senior staff at Grant Thornton’s Euston office.
After finishing my internship in mid-August, I spent two beautiful weeks on the fjords in Norway. On arriving home I received a call from the graduate recruitment team informing me I had been picked as a winner alongside four other interns from around the UK! We were invited to deliver our internship presentations to Sacha Romanovitch (National Leadership Board member for People and Culture at Grant Thornton) alongside two senior graduate recruiters.
The Grant Thornton Intern of the Year regional winners were selected for their performance in role during their internship, coupled with the research project and presentation they were given to work on during the first day induction. Each intern was given one of four topics, determined by the National Leadership Board. During the internship we had to carry out research and then deliver our presentations to members of our teams, in my case the partner, senior manager and my line manager from the Property Tax team, followed by a ten minute Q&A. I delivered a presentation on the subject of social media in business, and am now a regular used of twitter and LinkedIn!
We were marked on various competencies including: initiative, ownership, adaptability, critical thinking, business insight, results driven, builds business relationships and motivation. It was up to each intern to make sure they looked for all possible opportunities to demonstrate these competencies.
On the day itself, the regional winners arrived at the London Headquarters to meet and present to Sacha. As a member of the National Leadership Board, Sacha is one of the most senior people at Grant Thornton and made it a priority to spend a few hours of her day with us to listen to our ideas and thoughts on important subjects. Our presentations were in the same format as those we delivered during our internship – so learning to keep old notes came in very handy! We all listened to each others’ presentations and joined in the Q&A – it was great to see the quality of work from my fellow interns. We were also filmed. After this, we were treated to a three course meal on the top floor with a fantastic view of London. The meal lasted two hours and gave the us all a great opportunity to discuss different aspects of Grant Thornton life with Sacha and the graduate recruiters.
I would like to congratulate Samantha from the North region who delivered a fantastic and delightful presentation to win the overall Grant Thornton 2013 Intern of the Year award, as well as my fellow regional winners, Lewis (London), James (South) and Olivia (Central) who were also regional winners.
