Signing up for a training contract for three years isn’t something you should do lightly. It’s kind of like choosing a University or college to attend. It’s a big commitment, so having an interesting place to live with lots of opportunities for maintaining a good work-life balance is really important. The firm has offices all across the UK and each of you will want something different from where you choose to live. In this blog I explain why I chose to relocate to work in East Anglia.
I decided to move to East Anglia roughly two years ago. I grew up in Birmingham and studied at Royal Holloway, University of London, so the move to East Anglia was a big change. I wanted to take the opportunity to experience a different part of the country. I also knew that branching out and living somewhere new would provide me with a chance to try new things and make more friends.
I began my time at Grant Thornton in the corporate tax team in Ipswich. Before I joined, the team took me out for lunch and they told me everything I needed to know from where to live to which gym to join. I also discovered that I was not the only one to relocate as one of the other starters had moved down from Birmingham and one of my corporate tax colleagues had even gone to the same university as me.
What surprised me was that all the departments were welcoming, I met a lot of the office the weekend before I joined, after some auditors invited me to join them in a charity run. This meant that my first day was very relaxed as I had already met most of the office. In the months that followed my time in Ipswich was a lot of fun, the combination of sporting events, Christmas dinners, quizzes and other social events really helped to cement my move.
The move to East Anglia proved to be a great decision, I have made a lot a new friends and had a lot of fun along the way. Having said that, when deciding to move you may want to consider the following questions.
Does the region have clients in the sectors that interest you? Whilst all offices have clients in a wide range of sectors, they will often have more of one type. So many of our high tech clients are based in Cambridge and many of our hauliers are dealt with from our Ipswich office.
How far are you from your family and friends? If you plan on visiting your family often or making it back for special occasions then you may want to consider how big your commute is. Maintaining a good work life balance is crucial to a successful and happy career.
These are just two obvious questions you may think about but if you have any further questions, please let us know by sending in questions on the forum or commenting underneath our blogs.
