City-of-London1-573x400

I’m Dan and I’ve recently joined the Financial Services Tax team as a Graduate. I’m going to give you a flavour of what our team does, as well as what you might get up to as an associate in our team.

The FS tax team provide both compliance and advisory tax services to the financial services industry, however the team focuses on 3 main areas; insurance, banking and asset management. Compliance work includes completing tax returns for companies and partnerships. The team also works to advise clients on transactional issues, general corporate tax, providing support in the event of a tax investigation and other legislative changes.

#BusinessArea Series: Transfer Pricing Tax

Transfer Pricing

Read Lee Witkowksi’s engaging blog about the world of Transfer Pricing Tax – it makes for an interesting read!

So I stumbled into transfer pricing (or TP) when I plucked an option from the GT recruitment site and ran with it.  To this day I am so unbelievably glad that random chance has landed me here.  As a graduate, working in TP is the best exposure to every aspect of business.  Quite literally from day one you can get involved directly in client work and contribute to projects.  I remember feeling like I was going to be exposed when everyone in the team found out I didn’t know anything about TP!  The truth is, no one expects you to be any sort of expert when you get here, and chances are, pretty much everyone was in your shoes once upon a time.

Pic-Blog-573x400

Almost a year after his first Spilling the Beans blog-  ‘Real Taxing’ – Marco shares more about the fast expanding Real estate tax team, and the exciting trainee opportunities on offer.

Working in the Real Estate tax team means that no day is ever really the same. Our wide ranging client base across all areas of the world mean that we have a vast array of different tax issues to deal with. We deal with corporation tax, income tax, stamp duty land tax, VAT on property transactions, capital allowances (Tax depreciation), annual tax on enveloped dwellings, as well as many more issues that clients send our way.

From the outset, this role is client-facing, and it is easy to quickly build up a rapport with clients, be it via email, telephone conversations or face-to-face meetings. Our team is rapidly expanding and recently we welcomed our new cohort of graduates and school leavers.

#Business Area Series – Entrepreneur and Private Client Tax

UK-Tax-ReturnThe firm’s Entrepreneur and Private Client (EPC) teams specialise in looking after the tax affairs of high net worth individuals, their families and their businesses to provide a bespoke service advising on the tax aspects of a variety of matters from estate planning, international and domicile issues and trust structuring through to corporate reconstructions.

As a trainee in EPC, the first thing that strikes you is the amount of tax that there is to understand.  We work with, and advise on, all manner of taxes: income, corporation, capital gains, inheritance, stamp duty land tax, stamp duty and national insurance (we tend to refer all VAT issues to the experts) which makes the job exciting but does mean that the hours spent studying for CTA exams come in very useful.

This week’s #GTArea Series are dedicated to tax. Elly McArthur from the Glasgow office shares her experience as a trainee in Corporate tax.

I joined the corporate tax team in the Glasgow office two years ago. I studied accountancy at university and had a particular interest in tax. From researching Grant Thornton and meeting them at various events, I knew it was definitely the firm I wanted to join

The corporate tax team carries out both corporate tax compliance work and corporate tax advisory work. Compliance work is essentially calculating how much corporation tax our clients have to pay. The advisory work can range from anything from a research and development claim to a complete restructuring of a business. Read this post

Settling into London Life…

Hi, I’m Sapna and I have lived in London for over three years now, but working in the financial services industry in London is very different to the university life I once had here. It has been just over two months since I started working in the London Finsbury Square office as an associate in the financial services tax team. The first couple of months seem to have gone so quickly from full working days to social events in the evenings, and now the joys of revision for my ACA exams. Read this post

Intern of the Year Awards

Hello! My name is Isabel Candy and I interned this summer in the Property Tax department in the London office. I was fortunate enough to be one of two interns awarded the title of Grant Thornton Intern of the Year 2013 Regional Winner for London, and spent a day with the other regional winners presenting to senior staff at Grant Thornton’s Euston office.
