A Day in the Life of a (Trainee) Tax Investigator – Anusha

Anusha

Hi, I’m Anusha and I recently joined the National Tax Investigations team in our London Euston office. When considering which team I wanted to join, Tax Investigations appealed to me as it offers diversity across the taxes (e.g. Corporation Tax, Income Tax, VAT, etc.) and provides on-going challenges as HMRC continues to tackle tax evasion and avoidance.

My curiosity in recent highly publicised cases such as the Panama Papers, the Apple tax ruling, and the tax shaming brought upon big corporates, such as Starbucks and Google, and individuals like Jimmy Carr, confirmed that a role in Tax Investigations was definitely for me. In a nutshell, the team helps clients seek a fair resolution to any tax disputes and leads discussions with HMRC.

The great thing about Tax Investigations is that it doesn’t just cover one area of tax; it is massively varied, and this makes it incredibly interesting and exciting. As a team, we work with various types of clients including individuals, partnerships, and companies who may face issues such as undisclosed offshore bank accounts, undeclared income, and corporate or personal tax irregularities. I enjoy the diversity of the cases and the thrill of not knowing who’s going to come through the door next.

With HMRC cracking down on tax avoidance and evasion more than ever, we have to keep up-to-date with changes in the legislation and how it will affect our clients. As a result of this, the Tax Investigations team does a lot of business development, travelling both locally in the UK and internationally to communicate these changes to intermediaries (e.g. accountants, lawyers, or trust companies) and their clients who may be impacted. Consequently, we get fantastic opportunities to attend networking events and sometimes the opportunity to go abroad to visit offshore jurisdictions alongside the managers in the team.

I often get the opportunity to meet with clients and intermediaries as well as HMRC, which is an invaluable experience. In our line of work, we end up meeting people from all walks of life with engaging (and often quirky) back stories and with varying levels of tax irregularities – we never know what to expect, and so we have to be prepared for anything.

My day-to-day role varies as it largely depends on what kind of clients the team is engaged with. Some of my duties include: working with offshore banks to calculate undeclared income and gains, drafting reports to be submitted to HMRC, liaising with clients, technical research, data analysis, supporting business development, drafting blogs, and organising trips abroad.

Alongside all this exciting client work, I have been studying towards the ATT/CTA qualification at our fantastic training facility, Bradenham (please see our other content on Bradenham here). Studying whilst working full time is a completely different lifestyle to that of school/university, but one which I really enjoy because it means that I’m never bored (and studying at Bradenham means cake, cake and more cake!).

The team is based across the country in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds and offers graduate and school leaver roles in all of these locations. If you have any questions about Tax Investigations or the application process, we will be happy to help you understand whether this opportunity would be the right one for you!
